Ceanothus americanus

Jersey tea root (botanical name Ceanothus americanus), which forms the basis for the homeopathic remedy ceanothus, is a shrub that is indigenous to North America. This shrub species is also commonly known as New Jersey tea, wild snowball, mountain sweet (spelt as mountain-sweet or mountainsweet too) and different varieties of red root (including redroot and red-root). The name Jersey tea was actually coined during the time of the American Revolution as the leaves of this shrub were used as a substitute for the tea, which was imported.

Facial Mask Seaweed facial mask slows down the skin aging process and defends the skin from harsh environments.

The Ceanothus americanus shrub usually grows up to a height of anything between 18 inches and 42 inches. The shrub grows slender branches, while its root system is chunky having fibrous root hairs on the surface. However, the root system of Ceanothus americanus is solid, strong and woody that penetrates deep underneath the ground. In fact, the root system of this shrub can occasionally grow very large when growing in the nature. This aspect actually helps the roots to avoid or make up from the damages caused by their constant exposure to wildfires. This shrub bears flowers that grow in clusters on long, supplementary peduncles (flower stalks). The fruits of Ceanothus americanus are dehydrated, dehiscent (fruits that open up spontaneously to release seeds) seed capsules.

While the medicinal use of the shrub in homeopathy was initially discovered way back in the 19th century, it was only after 1900, following extensive researches, that the plant was identified as a therapy for pain as well as swelling of the spleen.

Ceanothin was used in my family since the 1900's as a boost to coagulation. When I was a child living in the country I cut my upper thigh badly (1955). The 4 inch gash bled badly. My grandmother pulled the gash together with strips of adhesive tape (now called butterfly strips) and gave me a thick liquid made of ceanothus every 20 minutes until the bleeding subsided. My Mother gave it to me again after the birth of each of my 2 children to stop the hemorrhaging and blood clots the size of my palm. An ounce every 20 minutes. It slowed the bleeding and I was given 4 units of 'whole' blood (whole blood was avail. in the 1960's). Now modern medicine has uncovered that our family has a factor Vlll condition called Von Willebrands disorder and we are given DDAVP infusions before any surgery. But, before that Grandma's remedy of tincture of ceanothus was the treatment of choice for bleeding.
